This four-part, interactive workshop series is your complete introduction to programming Python for people with little or no previous programming experience. By the end of the series, you will be able to apply your knowledge of basic principles of programming and data manipulation to a real-world social science application.
This three-part series will cover the following materials:
Part 1: Introduction
This workshop will introduce address geocoding - the process of determining the geographic coordinates for a place names, zip codes and street address. The first part of this workshop will be an introduction to the process of geocoding and ways to fine tune the output. We will then introduce and practice using a few of the online tools for geocoding including Google MyMap and ArcGIS Online.
This is a three-part series for qualitative researchers interested in learning about MAXQDA, a qualitative data analysis (QDA) software program for which D-Lab provides substantive support. Participants who do not have MAXQDA are encouraged to download the trial and use their own data sets to engage in hands-on learning durng the workshop.
This workshop is Part 2 of a two-part series on survey sampling. Multi-stage sampling is required when a complete list of the target sampling units (persons or households) is unavailable or too expensive to assemble. This workshop will discuss how to select units in stages so that the final sample is a probability sample of the defined population.
In this workshop we will cover two main supervised text analysis methods, the dictionary method, and supervised classification. We will use list comprehension to implement the dictionary method, using sentiment analysis as our example.
R FUN!damentals Part 4: Putting it all together
In the final part, we will review data importation, subsetting, and visualization. Students will then be given the majority of time to reproduce a workflow on two different datasets, ask questions, and reveiw the solutions as a group.

Part 3 Topics:
This workshop is the first part of a two-part series on survey sampling. This first workshop will cover the basic principles and methods of sampling. Topics will include a discussion of the various types of samples, the creation of sampling frames, the use of stratification, and basic methods of selecting samples. Determining an appropriate sample size will also be discussed.
This workshop will introduce students to the basics of designing a survey instrument using the Qualtrics platform, such as randomization and survey flow. We will also cover more advanced topics like implementing embedded data and using javascript, as well as tips and tricks on how to use your design to maximize the number of quality responses you get.
Come learn how to turn your data into beautiful webmaps using R and Leaflet, one of the most popular libraries for creating web maps. We’ll cover how to build the entire workflow from raw data to interactive map all within R, so your analysis and mapping are entirely reproducible.
Come to this workshop to explore Scrivener, a software program that allows you to organize the many components of writing an academic paper, thesis, fiction book, or nonfiction book. This software can also be used to note ideas, outline, rearrange writing structures, and track changes as your ideas evolve.
Participants in this workshop will learn about some of the issues surrounding the collection of health statistics, and will also learn about authoritative sources of health statistics and data. R FUN!damentals Part 3: Data Exploration and Analysis
Students will be introduced to data exploration and analysis in R. You will learn how to summarize data and explore it with histograms, scatterplots, and boxplots. You will also be introduced to coding statistical data analysis via t-tests, analyses of variance, correlation, and linear regression.

Part 2 Topics:
This workshop will cover methods for mapping tabular geospatial data. Participants will learn how to add columns (or fields) to the attribute table that describes geographic features. This allows new variables to be created, updated, mapped and analyzed. We will then explore data table joins that allow you to link the content in two tables together based on a common field.
This is a three-part series for qualitative researchers interested in learning about MAXQDA, a qualitative data analysis (QDA) software program for which D-Lab provides substantive support. This session introduces the basic features of MAXQDA, including how to add data sources, set up the coding scheme, and apply codes.
