This class will cover the basics of Excel, from simple formulas (SUM, COUNTIF) to more complex Excel features like Macros and the Data Analysis ToolPak. By the end of both sections, students will be able to employ Excel skills to open source policy data sets. These skills are transferrable to any sector.
Topics Covered Will Include:
This hands on workshop builds on part 2 by introducing the basics of Python's scikit-learn package to implement unsupervised text analysis methods. This workshop will cover a) vectorization and Document Term Matrices, b) weighting (tf-idf), and c) uncovering patterns using topic modeling.

With a little HTML and CSS under your belt, you'll know how to edit "under the hood" so you can place an image exactly where you want it, customize the formatting of text, or troubleshoot copy & paste issues.

R Fundamentals Part 4: Putting it all together
In the final part, we will review data importation, subsetting, and visualization. Students will then be given the majority of time to reproduce a workflow on two different datasets, ask questions, and review the solutions as a group.
R Fundamentals Part 3: Data Exploration and Analysis
Students will be introduced to data exploration and analysis in R. You will learn how to summarize data and explore it with histograms, scatterplots, and boxplots. You will also be introduced to coding statistical data analysis via t-tests, analyses of variance, correlation, and linear regression.

Part 1 Topics:
This workshop will cover theory and techniques for maximizing the effectiveness of figures used for visualizing information. Rather than teaching any particular visualization software, this course will teach students about the "nuts and bolts" of effective data visualization.

Part 1: Introduction
R Fundamentals Part 2: Subsetting and Reshaping
This 2-part workshop will introduce the ArcGIS Online (AGOL) platform. AGOL is a web-based mapping software that allows you to build maps and explore data online. Topics to be covered include how to construct a simple web map from a spreadsheet of data, perform basic spatial analysis and queries, and publish the map to the web.
This workshop will provide a comprehensive overview of graphics in R, including base graphics and ggplot2. Participants will learn how to construct, customize, and export a variety of plot types in order to visualize relationships in data.
This is a three-part series for qualitative researchers interested in learning about MAXQDA, a qualitative data analysis (QDA) software program for which D-Lab provides substantive support. Participants who do not have MAXQDA are encouraged to download the trial and use their own data sets to engage in hands-on learning durng the workshop.
