This workshop will cover theory and techniques for maximizing the effectiveness of figures used for visualizing information. Rather than teaching any particular visualization software, this course will teach students about the "nuts and bolts" of effective data visualization. Dr.

This is an archive of our past training offerings. We are looking to include workshops on topics not yet covered here. Is there something not currently on the list? Send us a proposal.
This workshop will prepare attendees to conduct effective and inclusive classes. There will be an emphasis on science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM) pedagogy, but most of the lessons will applicable outside of STEM fields as well. Special attention will be paid to in-class techniques to improve the experience and performance of underrepresented students.
While a doctoral degree from Cal is most helpful in securing a tenure-track position, the truth is that not everyone wants to go that route, and there aren’t enough positions for everyone who completes a PhD. Non-academic careers offer a great deal of flexibility in terms of topic area, preferred geographic location, and compatibility with spousal careers.
This talk will introduce The Papers of George Washington, a documentary editing project at the University of Virginia, and examine the ways the editors have integrated technology and innovation into the editorial process in order to make Washington and his papers widely accessible.
R markdown is a fast, simple, and convenient way to generate fully reproducible documents based on the R syntax that you are already using for your analyses. Are you presenting at lab meeting? You can copy and paste your .R into .Rmd, click one button, and create a presentation that can be opened on any computer with a web browser. Do you want to support reproducibility in science?
Join the Qualitative Methods Group (QMG) for a discussion with Dr. Keith Feldman on triangulating information across a range of qualitative data sources. Dr. Feldman will share his experience with working with novels, poems, memoirs, letters, posters, speeches, performances, and policy prescriptions.
CartoDB.com is a versatile cloud-powered spatial database, mapping, analysis and visualization engine that facilitates the process of building spatial applications for both web and mobile devices; the platform is currently used by major news organizations, research institutions, non-profits and geospatial application developers.
The goal of this lab is to understand basic concepts and functions of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and produce geo-coded maps (displaying data) using ArcGIS. We will go over the very basics of spatial data and coordinate systems used in GIS, and then create thematic maps with demographic data representing the Bay Area from the US Census Bureau.
This workshop will provide both a conceptual background and practical experience in computer assisted qualitative data analysis (CAQDA) using ATLAS.ti. The workshop begins by examining the core elements common to all CAQDA, regardless of methodological orientation, discipline/profession, or platform.
This two-hour seminar is designed to give Qualtrics beginners the skills and knowledge to successfully run online surveys and survey experiments. The seminar will cover the Qualtrics environment, question design, question blocks and survey flow, display logic, and other tools for creating respondent-friendly surveys.
Coding is done, now what? You’ve finished coding your qualitative data and now it’s time to start the “analysis” process. Where do you start? Through this interactive workshop session, qualitative researchers will learn several approaches to transition from coding to analysis. Researchers in all phases of the qualitative research process are welcome to attend.
Come join us for an ArcGIS installfest. ArcGIS is the main GIS (geographic information system) software used with and beyond academia for geographical and spatial analysis as well as cartography and map production. The focus will be on helping attendees install ArcGIS on their Macs, as this is a much harder software setup than on a windows PC.
This 2-hour workshop is geared towards applied researchers looking to use R for basic data analysis. It will introduce participants to the basics of data manipulation (notably using plyr and reshape2), regression, and regression diagnostics. The workshop will also briefly cover packages for data visualization (including lattice and ggplot2), matching, and data imputation.
This 3-hour Stata workshop is designed for people who have already taken D-Lab's 'Beginning Stata' and 'Intermediate Stata' workshops or have significant previous experience with Stata. Students will review regression analysis, and basic regression output, and discuss two major topics:
In this workshop we will learn about the basic concepts involved in georeferencing and get some hands-on experience with the process in ArcGIS, a common GIS software platform. Georeferencing involves “spatializing” scanned maps or aerial imagery so that they can be used in a GIS. We will cover the basics of topics such as projections, coordinate systems, and the theory behind georeferencing.
This workshop will focus on becoming familiar with searching and downloading the data published by the US Census Bureau via Factfinder and Social Explorer. This will include understanding the data format, Census region mapping, the different surveys used in the US Census, and statistical concept of sampling error in the American Community Survey.
In this workshop we will learn about the basic concepts involved in georeferencing and get some hands-on experience with the process in QGIS, a free, open-source GIS tool. Georeferencing involves “spatializing” scanned maps or aerial imagery so that they can be used in a GIS. We will cover the basics of topics such as projections, coordinate systems, and the theory behind georeferencing.
Join the Qualitative Methods Group (QMG) for a discussion with Dr. Laura Enriquez on conducing field work outside of the United States. Dr. Enriquez will share her experience with conducting research throughout Latin America.
Drupal is a powerful, open-source content management system (CMS) that provides a flexible platform for websites and web-based research projects. This workshop will cover the basics of how Drupal works, covering essential site building topics such as fields, content types, users, menus, blocks taxonomies, and views. The material covered in the workshop can be applied to administrative (e.g.
This workshop provides a discussion of federal regulations overseeing human subjects research, levels of review and application submission guidance.
