Opening the Black Box - D-Lab Opening Celebration

Find out what's inside the black box. We'll show you our strategy so far. And we'll ask for your involvement, because we're just getting started. We're an empirical social science laboratory, and we can only design solutions to problems (yours) we understand.

  • Talk with the D-Lab team
  • Be introduced to our governing board
  • Meet the architect who designed our incredible space
  • Give us your input and help

Intro to R

This 2-hour workshop introduces the basics of data analysis in R, a powerful and free open-source programming environment. You will learn the core properties of the R programming language through step-by-step examples and scaffolded exercises with data provided by the instructor. At the end of the workshop you will be able to import, analyze, manipulate, and save data sets, and create simple plots of the data.

Ethnographic Tools

Join a collaborative workshop focusing on data management for ethnographers. How do you take and organize fieldnotes? How do you use and keep track of multiple kinds of "data", from course notes to images, interview transcripts to pdfs? Do you have a favorite tactic for outlining and organizing your writing?

Statistics / SocSci mixer

D-Lab was built to support data-intensive social sciences. The statistics graduate students would like to participate in this effort. We're continuing our informal discussions between social science and statistics grad students, hoping to engage in some dialogue to foster better forms of collaboration at an exploratory, journal article-scale level.

Lunch will be provided for the first 20 to sign up -- please RSVP if you want us to hold a box lunch from FSM.

What Can Digital Humanities Do for You?

What can digital humanities do for you?

What new avenues of inquiry are opened by digital tools and methodologies? How can you as an individual get started with incorporating these tools into your research? This afternoon of events will provide you with an interdisciplinary perspective on the potential of digital humanities research, as well as hands-on experience with widely applicable tools.

This afternoon of events is sponsored by the Office of the Dean of Arts & Humanities, The Townsend Center, Berkeley Center for New Media, and UC Berkeley IST.
