Statistics / SocSci mixer

D-Lab was built to support data-intensive social sciences. The statistics graduate students would like to participate in this effort.

You may have had frustrating experiences with our consulting services, but so have we! We're hoping to engage in some dialogue to foster better forms of collaboration with the social science graduate students, set up clear expectations of what rewarding collaborations look like, and talk about practical ways D-Lab can facilitate these goals.

Managing Collaborative Digital Projects

Digital projects require collaboration and sustained technical support, bringing new challenges to researchers in the social sciences and humanities who are used to working independently. This workshop covers the basics of collaboration on digital projects: forming and developing research teams; establishing a research vision; ensuring the effectiveness of the project; and finding tools and support. It will be led by Lynne Siemens (UVic), whose experience with DHSI provides a valuable perspective on these issues.

From Words to Networks and Back Again - How measuring the impact of media is changing journalism and filmmaking

Media permeates our lived experience. Non-profit and new community producers from Public Radio to YouTube are reinventing the economics and expectations of content creation. Audiences no longer accept passive consumption of high quality content -- they engage directly. Increasingly they also want to participate in solutions driven storytelling. Social and mobile networks provide new channels for this engagement to expand the power of media to drive policy and culture.
