Document Preparation using LaTeX

The workshop will cover the philosophy behind LaTeX, including how it's different from other word processing programs, documentation preparation with LaTeX, including mathematical typesetting, and an introduction to creating bibliographies with BibTeX.

Content and Geographies of Census Surveys

This workshop provides an introduction to the censuses and surveys conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, with a particular focus on the content and geographic coverage of each.

Advanced Topics in R

This 3-hour workshop is geared towards R users hoping to learn some advanced skills. I will introduce participants to various ways to deal with large datasets (using dplyr, data.table, RMySQL), ways to acquire data from the web, and also how to build, document, test and deploy your own R packages. Previous experience with R is assumed.

Qualitative Data Analysis through NVivo

This two-part series covers how to organize and analyze qualitative data, and how to use NVivo in the process. Researchers new to qualitative methods are encouraged to attend both sessions.  More experienced researchers may choose to attend the second session only to learn more advanced techniques in NVivo. NVivo installation is not required for either training, but is highly recommended for Part 2.

Part 1: Organization in the Qualitative Analysis Process

Graphics in R

This 2-hour workshop will provide a comprehensive overview of graphics in R.  Participants will learn how to construct, customize, and export a variety of plot types using base graphics, lattice, and ggplot2.  Previous experience with R is assumed.

R for Stata Users

This 2-hour workshop is geared towards users with previous knowledge of Stata looking to carry out data analysis in R.  It will offer participants a side-by-side comparison of how the same analytical procedures can be implemented in both environments.  Topics to be covered include data manipulation, summary statistics, classical hypothesis tests, regression, regression diagnostics, and plotting.  Basic familiarity with R is assumed.

Useful Stuff in R

This 2-hour workshop is geared towards applied researchers looking to use R for basic data analysis.  It will introduce participants to the basics of data manipulation (notably using plyr and reshape2), regression, and regression diagnostics.  The workshop will also briefly cover packages for data visualization (including lattice and ggplot2), matching, and data imputation.  Previous experience with R, as well as intermediate-level knowledge of statistics, is assumed.

Qualitative Data Analysis Working Group (QDAWG)

This working group will convene weekly to discuss common challenges to doing qualitative research. The first four sessions will be led by D-Lab staff. Session 1 will provide an overview of designing qualitative research projects and there will be an opportunity for participants to propose changes or additions to the working group's planned agenda. Session 2 will address whether a research project can benefit from using a team of qualitative coders and how to manage those research assistants. Session 3 will focus on coding scheme development and coding strategies.

EndNote and RefWorks: Hands-on training session

Interested in relatively easy-to-use software that will *save you hours* of time?

Did you know that RefWorks is *free* for UCB students, staff, and faculty?

Did you know that EndNote is available for a *substantial discount* for UCB students, staff, and faculty?

In this class, we will cover the basics of using both EndNote and RefWorks. We'll go over how to add citations to your database, organize your citations, format your bibliography, and how to use EndNote and RefWorks with Microsoft Word to create reference lists and bibliographies.
