Description
Type:

This two-part series covers how to organize and analyze qualitative data, and how to use NVivo in the process. Researchers new to qualitative methods are encouraged to attend both sessions.  More experienced researchers may choose to attend the second session only to learn more advanced techniques in NVivo. NVivo installation is not required for either training, but is highly recommended for Part 2.

Part 1: Organization in the Qualitative Analysis Process

This workshop is about how to approach the qualitative analysis process.  Once you have your data, organization is the first step to analysis.  We will discuss several approaches to organizing your data and how you can use a Qualitative Data Analysis (QDA) software, like NVivo, in that process.  The training will highlight the key decisions that researchers must make about the unit of analysis, coding approach, and relevancy of the data, while demonstrating the key components of NVivo (folders, codes, memos, attributes, and output).

More specifically, the training will address:

  • Setting up folders
  • Adding attributes
  • Setting up codes
    • Deductive/inductive coding
    • Unit of analysis
  • Looking at output for codes
  • Running simple queries (one code) by folder and by attribute
  • Creating memos

Part 2: Analytical Tools in NVivo

This training is about what “analysis” means for qualitative data and how using a software program can help the researcher in that process.  We will cover how you can use different tools in NVivo to create data output that is useful in your analysis process.

The training will delve into the details of:

  • Broad vs. fine grain coding
  • Advanced queries including Boolean queries using and, or, not; matrix queries; coding comparison for group coding; word frequencies; and compound queries
