Info Session -- Data Science Faire

Info session co-sponsored by D-Lab and the School of Information:

Have you been building a data-centric project in a scientific domain? Are you running an open-source meetup on campus? Any toolkits to enable reproducible science? The first annual Data Science Faire (December 12, 2013) is the place to showcase your efforts to a broad audience, demonstrating the breadth and diversity of data science research at UC Berkeley.

Webscraping with Python

Web scraping is a powerful and increasingly important tool for social science researchers. It allows users to automatically download the content of websites as plain text files for use in data and text analysis. This workshop series is a thorough introduction to web scraping using the python package scrapy. By the end of the series, users will be able to automatically scrape the contents of an entire website. This workshop assumes some familiarity with python, which can be acquired by doing the first few lessons of codecademy. A laptop will be required.

Focus Group - Student Needs around Research Computing and Research Data Management

D-Lab is hosting a focus group to scope out grad students' research data infrastructure needs. This is a joint effort of UC Berkeley's Research Information Technologies & Educational Technologies groups. Led by Allison Bloodworth (ETS), the focus group's goal is to to understand student needs around research data management, research computing, and learning environments. We will *not* be discussing the learning management system (e.g. bSpace).

The first statistical package I learned how to use was Stata, simply because the classes I was taking were taught using Stata. Stata has served me well over the years, but I'm now slowly making the transition to using the open source language and software environment R. People use R for a variety of reasons, but for me it's a practical choice.
