Josh is a medical student and researcher in the UCSF Joint Medical Program specializing in mapping and geospatial analysis. Josh also serves as an instructor for the D-Lab.
Come learn how to build a map with your public health data! We’ll discus the basics of spatial data and talk about useful places to find health data. I’ll show examples of how simple (and complex) maps can improve your health-related research, advocacy and communication. Then we’ll spend the bulk of our time creating an example map together. You’ll leave the workshop with a basic understanding of how to clean your data and create print maps and online "web-maps" to display spatial data. Time permitting, we can discuss some other topics such as using R to map your data, advanced styling and building interactive web-apps with your data.
Prerequisites: No previous knowledge of mapping needed. Bring your computer and your spatial data if you have any, and please sign up for an account with CartoDB (https://cartodb.com/signup?plan=academy). Please also bring any favorite examples of health-related maps, as we’ll spend the first 5-10 minutes of class discussing these examples. And bring your lunch!
