Dedoose Webinar

Dedoose is a cross-platform application for analyzing text, video, and spreadsheet data for qualitative and mixed methods research. D-Lab is sponsoring this webinar so that campus users can get experience with one of the newer software offerings in this domain.

The training will begin with an orientation to the basic functionality of Dedoose. Then attendees will participate in entering their own data. We will have each person bring in a document to be uploaded, excerpted, and coded. Bring something to code. The last part of the session will include questions and answers.

Very Basic STATA Workshop

This very basic STATA workshop will cover:

  • Opening a Stata file in stata.
  • Using the menu bar and a do file.
  • Using a help file.
  • Generating or recoding new variables from old variables.
  • Labeling variables, values, and missing data.
  • Summarizing a variable (mean, median, standard deviation).
  • Making a cross tabulation.

Intro to Data Visualization in ArcGIS

The goal of this lab is to understand basic concepts and functions of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and produce geo-coded maps (displaying data) using ArcGIS. We will go over the very basics of spatial data and coordinate systems used in GIS, and then create thematic maps with demographic data representing the Bay Area from the US Census Bureau. For example, if you’ve ever seen a map that shows, say, poverty concentration or population density according to a color-coding scheme, it was likely produced in GIS.

Exporting, Cleaning, Graphing Data in Excel (US Census)

This workshop will focus on becoming familiar with searching and downloading the data published by the US Census Bureau. This will include understanding the data format, Census region mapping, the different surveys used in the US Census, and statistical concept of sampling error in the American Community Survey. Finally, the lab will practice exporting, cleaning, and graphing this data (including population pyramids) using Excel tools.

Essentials of Computing with Data

An introduction to fundamental aspects of computing with data, including the following topics:

Start-Up Chile Info Session

NEW: please RSVP on our Meetup (note, meetup.com has been having problems - if you have trouble, check back later. You're welcome to attend even if you can't sign up!)

Start-Up Chile is a program of the Chilean Government to attract world-class early stage entrepreneurs to start their businesses in Chile. It's a great opportunity to have the support to build your company while exploring the possibilities available in South America.

Twitter Workshop: Research Applications and Data Grant

This 2-hour workshop is for social and behavioral scientists who want to gain access to and use Twitter data in their research. The first hour is geared towards researchers that do not have extensive knowledge of how Twitter tweets may be turned into an empirical source. Sebastian Benthall will discuss how Twitter data can be incorporated into a variety of research designs to measure sentiment, map trends, and visualize fields.

Qualitative Data Analysis for Education

This workshop is designed for the Graduate School of Education participants in Professor Erin Murphy Graham's Introduction to Qualitative Methods course. This workshop is about how to approach the qualitative analysis process.  Once you have your data, organization is the first step to analysis.  We will discuss several approaches to organizing your data and how you can use a Qualitative Data Analysis (QDA) software, like NVivo, in that process.

Javascript Visualization

Have you seen fancy visualizations in web browsers and though, "Hey, I want to do that!" Coding for the browser can be daunting - there are many moving pieces. But the results can be amazing and engaging!

In this workshop, you'll learn the required architecture for displaying graphs and maps in a browser. We'll use the IPython notebook to make it easier to keep track of web servers and multiple files.
