An introduction to fundamental aspects of computing with data, including the following topics:

  • Overview of files, folders and directories: how to keep things organized so you can find them again.
  • What is a terminal/command prompt? 
  • Overview of storage formats: XML, plain text, "document formats," CSV, binary formats (e.g., HDF5) and databases.
  • How big is my data, really? And how does this relate to networking, storage, and compute choices?
  • How does the web work? What is a server?
  • What's a text editor/IDE/“application”? 
  • Pros and cons of using applications vs. using program/scripting approaches.
  • Overview of D-Lab offerings and other ways forward in the D-Lab
