The Construction Continues!

By: Hector Fernando...

By Hector Fernando Burga Staff, students and faculty at the third floor at Barrows have been witnessing much activity on the North side of the building. Construction workers have been diligently taking apart wall partitions and placing new metal channels to provide the skeleton for what will soon be D-lab’s Collaboratorium space. The schedule is being fulfilled and slowly the space is being transformed through the efforts of a team which includes architects, D-Lab staff, and students.

By Leo Bialis-White Classes and formal learning used to be confined to brick and mortar institutions. In the past decade, many courses have moved online, yet courses were still controlled by admissions boards and the ability to pay tuition. However, that too is changing. Increasingly, there are multiple outlets for free, online learning. I am also looking for support in terms of how to use various software like ArcGIS and social network stuff. I can’t wait to be part of D-Lab.” This quote is very interesting to me for several reasons.

By Savet Hong Over the past couple of months, we have been coordinating the design and re-envisioning of our “Collaboratorium”, a unique public area in D-Lab which will be dedicated to student consultations, workshops and one-to-one instruction. With the help of architects, project managers and consultants, we have reached the point of demolition. Finally the walls have started to tumble down, and soon our vision will soon start to become a reality according to new plans, proposals and the introduction of new infrastructure.

Collecting Data About Data

By: Hector Fernando...

By Melinda Fricke One of the most exciting parts about working for D-Lab is that in many ways, it’s an organization for researchers, by researchers. Many of us on the D-Lab start-up team are graduate students in the social sciences, and we’re working to improve access to data-related resources on campus for all social science graduate students. As researchers ourselves, we can put together a wish list of what resources we’d like to have access to. And as D-Lab team members, we can find a way to implement changes to help all social science researchers here at Berkeley.
