Description

This offering now starts on March 1, continuing March 8 and 15. XML is the basic standard from which many encoding languages are created, and it structures how most of the data on the Internet is stored. Ubiquitous in programming and relatively easy to learn, XML is a fundamental computing skill, and it can provide a powerful tool for manipulating and presenting data (e.g., for web scraping).

Examples of XML-based languages are HTML (the language of the web), KML (the language of Google Maps and Google Earth), and TEI (an archival standard for the creation and preservation of electronic texts). This workshop series introduces basic concepts and applications of XML, with applied workshops that focus on its use in HTML and KML. We will also look at manipulating HTML elements with cascading style sheets (CSS), as well as element selectors using jQuery. People of all computing backgrounds are welcome.
