This workshop will introduce geocoding--the process of determining the geographic location of a place name, zipcode, or address. The first part of this workshop will be an introduction to the process of geocoding and strategies for achieving good results. We will briefly discuss the pros and cons of the various software tools available for geocoding.

The workshop will include a hands-on exercise for geocoding street addresses in ArcGIS. We will also demonstrate how to link geocoded locations to census geographies, for example, associate a location with a census tract.

Please bring your laptop to participate in the exercises. You do not need to have ArcGIS installed on your computer. We will connect to remote desktops running ArcGIS. All you need is a web browser with the citrix receiver plug-in installed. Before the workshop connect to citrix.berkeley.edu and install the plugin when prompted. Firefox browser is preferred.
