Data Scientist & Data Services Lead

Dr. Patty Frontiera is the D-Lab Data Services Lead and a geospatial data scientist.  She is the the official campus representative for ICPSR, the Roper Center, and the Census State Data Center network, and serves as the Co-Director of the Berkeley Federal Statistical Research Data Center (FSRDC).  Patty also develops the geospatial workshop curriculum, teaches workshops and consults on geospatial topics.  Patty has been with the D-Lab since 2014 and served as the the Academic Coordinator through Spring 2017. Patty received her Ph.D. in Environmental Planning from UC Berkeley where her dissertation explored the application and effectiveness of generalized spatial representations in geographic information retrieval. Her work has focused on the design and development of web-based environmental planning and information systems. Specific areas of interest include web mapping, spatial databases, environmental informatics and the development of web-based geospatial analysis tools. Patty is also a lecturer in the UCB Data Science Undergraduate Education Program for which she has lead the develpment of an introductory geographic information course in python (ESPM88a).

Guidance on geospatial analysis methods in ArcGIS or R spatial packages. Import, transformation and export of geospatial data. Geospatial data processing in ArcGIS, R or postgis. Technical assistance with open source web mapping with OpenLayers, Leaflet, Mapserver and Geoserver.
