Omeka, Scalar, WordPress, Oh My!: Web Platforms for Digital Projects

How do you go about publishing a digital book, a multimedia project, a digital exhibit, or another kind of digital project? In this workshop, we'll take a look at use cases for common open-source web platforms like WordPress, Drupal, Omeka, and Scalar, and we'll talk about hosting, storage, and asset management. There will be time for hands-on work in the platform most suited to your needs. No coding experience is necessary. Please bring a laptop if possible.

This writing group is for graduate students who are working on projects that incorporate both qualitative data analysis (QDA) software (e.g., MAXQDA, Dedoose, NVivo, and ATLAS.ti) and development of a deliverable, such as a publishable paper, qualifying paper, thesis or dissertation.

This session focuses on teaching how to create, organize, and apply codes for different kinds of qualitative research projects. QMG Presents: Primer on Qualitative Research & Introduction to QDA Software

This session first provides a brief introduction to qualitative research, including differences (and similarities) between quantitative and qualitative research, overview of the general process, and review of methodologies. This session will then introduce qualitative data analysis (QDA) software, noting benefits and providing an overview of the four most popular programs (ATLAS.ti, Dedoose, NVivo, and MAXQDA).

Visualization in Excel

In Visualization in Excel, we will cover the fundamentals of visualization in Excel, including a checklist of considerations that should go into every visualization. We will also go through step by step instructions on how to make horizontal bar charts, slope graphs, butterfly charts, the good kind of pie charts, icon arrays, and how to graph confidence intervals. We will not be using Microsoft Office default colors.
