The D-Lab provides academic support services for scholars at every stage of the research process, from any background and at any learning level. Whether you are a freshman or faculty, our philosophy is IOKN2K! (it’s ok not to know!) D-Lab is a safe, supportive and collaborative environment in which students, staff, researchers and affiliates can learn new methods and tools or exchange experiences and knowledge. Our services are developed with social scientists and digital humanists in mind, yet they have broad applicability.
We are very excited to launch our Fall 2017 program of workshops, working groups and consulting services.
Workshops
We already have 30 (yes, thirty!) workshops scheduled for the first month of the semester, covering a wide range of topics including R, Python and Stata programming, qualitative research methods, mapping and GIS, optical character recognition and web platforms for digital projects. Working Groups
D-Lab working groups meet 1-4 times per month and allow participants to dive into a topic, develop a community, advance their research interests and work on the cutting edge. While new-comers of any background are always welcome, the working group format works best when participants commit to ongoing collaboration. Returning this September are the Computational Text Analysis working group, Qualitative Methods working group, Cloud Computing working group, Securing Research Data, and the Machine Learning Working Group. D-Lab is very happy to launch the new Women in Numbers working group which aims to bring together women scholars from a wide range of disciplines to engage in work that uses quantitative/computational/digital data and analysis.
Consulting
Did you know that the D-Lab provides free one-on-one consulting to members of the UCB campus community? Our consultants can provide guidance on a huge range of topics in the social sciences and humanities, both quantitative and qualitative, computational and traditional, for all stages in the research process from research design, data collection and cleaning, analysis and visualization. Data
Did I mention we consult around data as well as methods and tools? Our consultants can help you identify and obtain key data sets that may be applicable to your research questions. We also have the expertise and infrastructure to support restricted use data. You can read more about this on our data resources page.
