The UC Berkeley D-Lab (Social Sciences Data Laboratory) is hiring up to five full-fee remission, 50% time appointment (20 hours/week), graduate student researcher (GSR) positions starting in January 2020 to teach workshops and provide consulting. These positions may be renewed.

Requirements

• 20 hours/week appointment, in-office at D-Lab (3rd floor, Barrows Hall)

• Be available on campus starting Tuesday, January 14, 2020

• Have experience with social science, research data, and applications

• Experience working with underrepresented students

Preferred Qualifications

• Familiarity with D-Lab community principles

• Diverse background

• Teaching experience: as a lecturer preferred; we have canned materials for you to teach from although there are occasional opportunities to develop your own

• Consulting experience: as data science, statistical, programming, or computer science consultant or tutor preferred

• Research experience (individual, course work, professional, or as a GSR)

 

Responsibilities

 

Instructor track: 

 

• Teach 2-3 workshops each week

• Complete 3-5 consulting tickets each week

• Participate in organizational meetings, outreach activities and other administrative tasks

• Curriculum review and development 

• Research support as needed

 

Consultant track:

 

• Coordinate day-to-day consulting requests with the pool of D-Lab consultants, including managing backlog, communicating with clients, and working with D-Lab staff on future directions of the consulting service.

• Complete 3-10 consulting tickets each week

• Teach 1 workshop every week

• Participate in organizational meetings, outreach activities and other administrative tasks

• Research support as needed

 

Compensation and Hours

Full fee-remission, including:

• Tuition

• Student Service Fee

• Health Insurance Fee

• Berkeley Campus Fee

• Class Pass (AC Transit) Fee

• On-site training

• $24 to $26 hourly compensation in addition to fee-remission (based on experience)

Patty Frontiera

Dr. Patty Frontiera is the D-Lab Data Services Lead and a geospatial data scientist.  She is the the official campus representative for ICPSR, the Roper Center, and the Census State Data Center network, and serves as the Co-Director of the Berkeley Federal Statistical Research Data Center (FSRDC).  Patty also develops the geospatial workshop curriculum, teaches workshops and consults on geospatial topics.  Patty has been with the D-Lab since 2014 and served as the the Academic Coordinator through Spring 2017.
