Securing Research Data: Working with Sensitive and Restricted-Use Data
Please join us this Monday, February 8, 2-3pm, for the next Securing Research Data Working Group meeting. In celebration of Love Data Week, we will spotlight several new tools available (or coming soon) to researchers working with sensitive and restricted-use data:
Lexie Patten and Bernie Rossi of Information Services & Technology (IST) will describe the new Qualtrics option (“brand”) for health-related or level P4 data and a new feature available on the other campus brands for flagging survey questions that ask for personally identifiable information.
Chris Hoffman of Research IT will speak about the new Secure Research Data and Compute (SRDC) platforms. SRDC offers both virtual machines (available now) and a high performance computing environment (planned for launch in the spring). The SRDC Platform is designed for use with highly sensitive data -- called protection level “P4” in the UC data classification standard -- and complies with the data security requirements of many data owners.
Ann Glusker of the Library and Research Data Management will introduce a trial REDCap service that will be available for this semester. REDCap is a data collection tool that is used widely by researchers in public health, optometry, social welfare, psychology and other fields. The short-term service trial aims to deliver immediate help to a small number of projects and demonstrate the case for on-going campus support for a REDCap service.
“What’s the difference between these? Which service is right for my work? How do I get access?” These are the questions we hope to answer. Please come ready to ask!
