Come and experience the Digital Humanities at Berkeley Summer Institute through the Qualitative Data Analysis intensive offered by D-Lab instructor Zawadi Rucks Ahidiana. Stay for the daily lectures, food, and conversation. Your participation in other events besides the workshop is strongly recommended so that you get the full experience of our vibrant community, post-docs, fellow students, and faculty.  Please note that participants from the humanities will be given preferential enrollment if space runs out.

This workshop covers the basics of the analysis process with qualitative data, such as archival documents, media coverage, and interviews. Building on the approaches of social science, the workshops provide an overview of what tools and methods humanists might borrow from qualitative social scientists and how to do so. Workshop participants will learn how to use MaxQDA, a qualitative data analysis software package that offers analytical tools for content analysis (also called text analysis), discourse analysis (also called thematic analysis), and data visualization. The series includes the following workshops:

  • Social science v. humanist uses of qualitative data
  • What is qualitative data analysis?
  • The basics of MaxQDA
  • Taking a content analysis approach
  • Taking a discourse analysis approach
  • Data visualizations with qualitative data

Please note: This workshop runs Monday through Friday (August 15 through 19) with two sessions each day. The first session will take place from 9:00AM to 11:00AM and the second session will run from 3:00PM to 5:00PM each day.THIS WORKSHOP IS FULL.  If you are on the waitlist please show up the first day to see if space is available.
