Get an orientation to the basics of working with social science data in python. We'll start from the ground up, from the basics of naming variables, making decisions, and repeating operations to making informative (or at least fun) pictures on your screen.
It is expected that you will be familiar with working in a Unix command line shell (ls, cd, mv, cp, rm, more/less), using Git for basic version control (pull, push, add, commit), and using a programming text editor (like SublimeText 2, GitHub Atom, Emacs, Vim, BBEdit...). IF YOU DON'T, THAT'S OK! We have a training for you the day before this workshop starts on programming fundamentals.
Please try to install VirtualBox and use it to import the BCE VM - we've put a lot of work into creating a standardized environment so you don't need to do a bunch of fussy setup. We'll have USB drives on hand at the start of the traning for those of you that have trouble (and explain a bit about VMs as well).
