When & Where
Date:
Mon, August 24, 2015 - 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Location:
D-Lab: Convening Room (356 Barrows Hall)
Description
Type:

The continuous advancement of web technologies has raised the bar for reporting and visualizing data. Static plots and pdfs are increasingly being supplanted by interactive data graphics. In this workshop, we will learn how to create interactive plots, tables, and maps in R by writing R Markdown documents in RStudio. After reviewing the basics of R Markdown, we will learn how to create R Markdown files that when saved as HTML files provide interactivity through widgets and JavaScript libraries. Lastly, we will learn how to convert a R Markdown document into a simple Shiny app, which will be the focus for the second data visualization workshop, and how to share interactive HTML documents created by R Markdown.

Participants are welcome to bring their own data (e.g., a csv file) to design and build an interactive plot or table.

Prerequisites: basic proficiency in R, RStudio and required packages installed (will email the list a day before workshop). No knowledge of JavaScript or HTML required (that's the beauty of R Markdown!)
