Join us with D-Lab Fellow, Aniket Kesari, as he shares about his research!

Data breaches are becoming an increasingly serious public policy problem. High profile breaches like those at Equifax, Target, and Facebook compromised millions of individuals’ personally identifiable information. Aniket's research examines various aspects of U.S. data protection law to assess how well public policy currently deters data breaches. His first paper asks whether state data breach notification laws reduce identity theft. Using a synthetic control design, he models California’s data breach notification law to understand whether there is evidence of covered entities investing in stronger cybersecurity measures. His second paper asks whether it is possible to predict which publicly traded companies are most at risk of suffering a breach. Using a combination of natural language processing and machine learning, he develops a predictive algorithm that could be used as an auditing tool.
