This workshop will teach participants how to build a visually appealing, easy-to-use personal website with Dreamhost and Wordpress. Particular attention will be paid to building a personal academic site, such as those widely desired by graduate students entering the job market.
No web development or design experience is necessary for attending this workshop. However, due to the initial challenge of installing wordpress and setting up a domain, we will be splitting this workshop into two days.
The first day, November 5, will be dedicated to setting up a domain and hosting account on Dreamhost and installing wordpress. While I recommend Dreamhost, participants are free to use any hosting service they like as long as fulfil wordpress's requirements. For more about hosting your wordpress site, see here.
Most participants will also be registering a domain name such as www.myname.org with Dreamhost. However, if you already have a domain purchased but wish to host your site on Dreamhost, please come and bring your domain account information. We will also be covering how to get berkeley.edu subdomain, such as myname.berkeley.edu
If you already have a domain with Wordpress installed, please feel free to skip this this day.
The second day, November 6, will be dedicated to using Wordpress to build out a professional-looking personal site. We will be going over topics such as communication strategy, Wordpress content artchitecutre (posts, pages, tags, categories, media), free and premium themes, site building elements (widgets, menus, shortcodes), plugins and special features, and migrating your site. This will be a hands-on training and participants are expected to have an installation ready to go so that they can start building.
