Date:
Tue, February 24, 2015 - 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM
Location:
D-Lab: Convening Room (356 Barrows Hall)
Description
Type:

The goal of this workshop is to cover the basic steps and considerations for creating a GIS based on a historical map and historical address data. We will use ArcGIS 10.2 to create the GIS. We will also use OpenRefine — a free, open-source text refiner — in order to clean the data that we will geocode.

Specifically, this workshop will cover:
- Importing and georectifying a scanned map raster image into ArcGIS;
- Adding a base map layer to the Table of Contents;
- Digitizing streets based on the historical map;
- Adding fields to the Table of Attributes;
- Editing the Table of Attributes to add address ranges, street names and districts;
- Using OpenRefine to clean data (that will eventually be geocoded)
- Creating an address locator;
- Geocoding addresses from an Excel sheet.
