From the Vice Chancellor for Research

Posted: 6/13/13

We are beginning the process of selecting a Director for the Social Sciences Data Laboratory (D-Lab).  D-Lab is a new initiative at Berkeley, creating a 21st-century research infrastructure that will dramatically expand Berkeley’s capabilities in data-intensive social science by providing services, support, and a venue for cutting-edge research design and experimentation across the campus in this domain.  Candidates should be a tenured Berkeley faculty member with a well-established research record, professional reputation, and leadership and administrative abilities.  It is acceptable for individuals to self-nominate.  The term of the appointment is for five years.

The Social Sciences Data Laboratory (http://dlab.berkeley.edu/) catalyzes world-class research in data intensive social science.  D-Lab’s signature focus is research design – intelligent, rigorous, and tuned to the transformative opportunities opened up by a data-rich world.   D-Lab offers cross-disciplinary resources for in-depth consulting and advising, access to staff support, and training and provisioning for software and other infrastructure needs.

The Director should have a broadly compelling vision and organizational skills.  He or she will define the D-Lab’s research profile, expand its services, and lead a strong scientific and administrative staff through a period of rapid growth.  The Director is responsible for developing synergies on and off campus with academic departments, research institutes and centers, industry partners, and community organizations.

The closing date for nominations is August 1, 2013.  Please submit names for the search committee’s consideration to Jackie Jones at the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research (jackie_jones@berkeley.edu).
