From the (new!) Berkeley Digital Humanities Council:

Looking for opportunities to develop hands-on skills with digital humanities tools and methodologies? Consider registering for the Digital Humanities Summer Institute (DHSI; June 2-6, 2014 in Victoria, BC, Canada), which offers week-long courses on topics including:

  • Out-of-the-box text analysis
  • Geographical information systems
  • Electronic literature in the digital humanities
  • Digital humanities databases
  • Network analysis
  • Drupal for digital projects

Because Berkeley's College of Letters and Sciences and the D-Lab are DHSI sponsors this year, all Berkeley-affiliated students, staff and faculty can use Berkeley's sponsor code (http://dhsi.org/registration.html#SponsorCodes) to receive discounted tuition ($300 for students, $650 for non-students with the discount). This does not include travel and lodging in Victoria, but reasonably-priced dormitory housing can be arranged through DHSI. A limited number of scholarships and student travel bursaries are also available: http://dhsi.org/scholarships.php. Because scholarships are reviewed on a rolling basis, and courses fill up quickly, you should plan on registering no later than mid-November.

In addition to providing instructors for two DHSI courses, Berkeley plans to send five interested faculty members to DHSI this year. Selected applicants will receive a tuition voucher for the course of their choice; travel and lodging are not covered, but low-cost housing options are available through DHSI.

If selected, faculty will be expected to:

    • Attend a small number (3-4) of cohort-building meetings in spring and fall 2014.
    • Give a presentation at a digital humanities event held at Berkeley in fall 2014.
    • Contribute to team-teaching a digital humanities survey course in spring 2014, focusing on the subject matter covered by your DHSI course.

To apply, please email digitalhumanities@berkeley.edu a copy of your CV and a statement (one page or less) indicating what course you would like to take, why, and how you anticipate incorporating the skills developed at DHSI into your teaching and/or research. Applications are due no later than Friday, October 25th; the Berkeley Digital Humanities Council will evaluate the proposals and notify all applicants by November 8th.
