12pm - Open Discussion in D-Lab Convening Room: Big Data and Spatial Analysis for Big History

Ruth Mostern will lead a practical discussion on several of her current and recent research projects. Her work includes the development of digital gazetteers and digital atlases concerning travel, politics and the environment of China and the Silk Road over large temporal and spatial scales; and the design and implementation of data sharing and collaborative environments for historical research.

Ruth Mostern is Associate Professor of History at the University of California, Merced, where she is the chair of the Interdisciplinary Humanities Graduate Group and the co-director of the Spatial Analysis and Research Center (SpARC).

1:30pm - D-Lab Open House in the D-Lab Collaboratory

Come see D-Lab and meet others interested in data-intensive research. Tell us what you work on and what your needs are. Light refreshments and thoughtful conversation provided.

3pm - Presentations in the D-Lab Convening Room: The Data Science Landscape at Berkeley

Representatives from two very important foundations will visit Berkeley on Tuesday to learn about "data science" across campus. D-Lab is one of the venues. We'd like them to see how lively "data science" is across campus, including the parts D-Lab was created to support, exactly in their multitude of forms.
