The Social Sciences Data Laboratory (D-Lab) is a dynamic new organization serving students and faculty across campus. It advances social science research by supporting the exploration, development, dissemination, and application of methodologies, toolkits, and resources for engaging with next-generation data sources as these emerge. Established in Spring 2013 under the Vice Chancellor for Research and already serving hundreds of researchers, D-Lab provides cross-disciplinary resources for in-depth training and consulting, access to staff support, and provisioning for software and other infrastructure needs.

The Administrative Officer provides support across D-Lab’s operations, programs, and planning:

  • Administers a defined operational program including the following functions: finance, purchasing, facilities, payroll, calendaring/scheduling, space planning and utilization, human resources, communications, safety (35%)
  • Gathers and analyzes financial and other resource data; prepares reports or analyses of operational activities, evaluation of current and proposed services, etc. (15%)
  • Functions as a resource on issues such as researching complex financial discrepancies, escalated customer service problems and vendor concerns. (10%)
  • Assesses and recommends changes to maintain compliance with federal and state requirements and internal policies. (5%)
  • Participates in the development and revision of standard operating procedures and guidelines. (5%)
  • Facilitates grant writing and administration by working with Research Administrators and funding agencies, gathers data for PI reports. (5%)
  • Event planning and execution for regular trainings and special events. (10%)
  • Oversees front desk staffing with workstudy students. (5%)
  • Participates in the development, maintenance, and oversight of budgets.  (10%)

Required qualifications:

  • Working knowledge of common campus-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Ability to learn new software applications.
  • Solid communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, both verbally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of a variety of administrative operations, such as budget creation, financial forecasting, managing calendars, hiring graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Strong skills in short-term planning, analysis, problem-solving, and customer service.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Ability to design, document, and oversee implementation of operational procedures.
  • Solid organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to multi-task with demanding timeframes and diverse staff constituencies, including career staff and graduate and undergraduate students.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
  • Ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns.
  • Working knowledge of limited UC policy and procedures or capacity to acquire it rapidly.
