D-Lab Has a New Director

After an intensive search, we are delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Justin McCrary as the founding Director of D-Lab, the Social Sciences Data Laboratory. Professor McCrary is Professor of Law and Co-Director of the Law and Economics Program. He brings to the position of founding D-Lab Director an unmatched combination of start-up energy, technical skills, and broad vision.

At a moment when Berkeley is investing in data-driven research across disciplines, this is a signal appointment for the social sciences across campus. D-Lab will partner with the Berkeley Institute for Data Science (BIDS) to catalyze world-class research in data-intensive social science. D-Lab’s signature focus is research design – intelligent, rigorous, and tuned to the transformative opportunities opened up by a data-rich world.

Professor McCrary will take up the D-Lab directorship, starting July 1, 2014. In the interim, we are grateful for the continued service through the transition of Professor Cathryn Carson, who has brought D-Lab to this point with admirable skill as D-Lab Operational Lead. We are also very pleased that Jon Stiles has agreed to take the position as interim Executive Director of D-lab until Professor McCrary assumes the Director position.
