There'll be a workshop this Saturday, Feb. 23, 8:00 (eek) - 11:00 am on how Berkeley can create new institutional ecologies for "data science." This is a fast attempt to develop on-the-ground knowledge of what works, doesn't work, and could work for "data science" here. It's to support a proposal to two foundations that Berkeley hopes to put in the very short term.
What "data science" is, is a subject for debate. It's often described as the intersection of domain (substantive) expertise, computational knowledge, and statistical skills. If you think you do "data science" (and social science is definitely included) please:
a) come to the workshop, or
b) leave comments at the workshop website, or
c) email us your thoughts.
And if you know of (gasp) empirical social science research relevant to "data science" career trajectories, reward structures, tool-based collaboration, and educational design, please be in touch.
