Can D-Lab help me with my master’s thesis / doctoral dissertation?

Yes! D-Lab provides consultation and workshops on many steps of the social science research process. The place to start is with our intake form or our consultants and service listings.

How do I get involved?

For data and research related questions, please complete our intake form or come by Barrows Hall during our hours of operation. For general inquiries, including media requests, prospective funders, potential off-campus partners, and service providers, please contact dlab@berkeley.edu or one of our staff.

What are D-Lab rates for supplemental services?

The D-Lab offers special services at additional cost.  The D-Lab offers supplemental consulting at $100 per hour for all UC affiliates (students, faculty, and staff) or $224 for non-UC affiliates for complex research and educational projects.  The D-Lab also provides supplemental workshops at $150 per person.  Rates are negotiable based upon project scope.  Please contact Executive Director Claudia von Vacano, cvonvacano AT Berkeley.edu, for specific inquiries.

What is D-Lab?

D-Lab is a new initiative at UC Berkeley to provide services, support, and a venue for cutting-edge research design and experimentation in data-intensive social science. We are building a 21st-century research infrastructure for the campus that will dramatically expand Berkeley’s capabilities, complementing and linking the localized arrangements that have been developed so far. Simultaneously we are opening a new portal for Berkeley social science to the world outside.

Happy New Year from D-Lab! The latest construction photos show that some color has been put on the walls. Blue and green start to define the “collaboratium" space as well as the class room where most of the classes will take place. The ceiling has also been dropped and doors have been added. We are getting close to the the placement of the millwork. Stay tuned for new developments!

By Hector Fernando Burga Staff, students and faculty at the third floor at Barrows have been witnessing much activity on the North side of the building. Construction workers have been diligently taking apart wall partitions and placing new metal channels to provide the skeleton for what will soon be D-lab’s Collaboratorium space. The schedule is being fulfilled and slowly the space is being transformed through the efforts of a team which includes architects, D-Lab staff, and students.

By Leo Bialis-White Classes and formal learning used to be confined to brick and mortar institutions. In the past decade, many courses have moved online, yet courses were still controlled by admissions boards and the ability to pay tuition. However, that too is changing. Increasingly, there are multiple outlets for free, online learning. That is, there are now online courses that are taught by professors at top universities and are open to anyone with internet access! The most prominent providers are Coursera, Udacity, OpenCulture, and EdX.

Graduate Students Need and Want D-Lab

By Claudia Von Vacano A close colleague of mine from the School of Education recently said to me, “Let me buy you a drink soon so that you can tell me all about your work at D-Lab. I find myself spending hours figuring out how to get access to qualitative and quantitative software and it’s so expensive. I am also looking for support in terms of how to use various software like ArcGIS and social network stuff. I can’t wait to be part of D-Lab.” This quote is very interesting to me for several reasons.
